Feline Pecking Order
When I got up this morning to go back to work after vacation, I filled one of the cats' water dishes. Dorothy (in userpic) immediately started drinking, while Kimba (one of the Siamese-mix tabbypoints) waited patiently in line.

The amusing thing is that Kimba is 19 pounds (all muscle and frame, according to the vet), while Dorothy is maybe 10 pounds soaking wet (not that I've dared try that experiment).

When I had Apollo and Sunshine they were that way with each other too. And about the same respective sizes.

If Kimba's personality is anything at all like Feldspar's, i'm not at all surprised that he would wait.

Kimba (in userpic) is a big mellow kitty. Dorothy was a stray when we adopted her, which may be why she is more assertive about getting food and water.

Feldspar, Kimba & Vir's (in pic) mutual mama is a very mellow kitty too. Let's hear it for genetics.

Somewhat relevant, possibly somewhat misquoted from the notebooks of Lazarus Long:
Never mess with a little man. He'll kill you.

Having now had 3 cats for almost 3 years now, my observation is that it tends to be very complicated. Our 3 girls have some sort of rotation system over who gets to be "top cat," punctuated by brawling and other forms of retaliation (If Metuka is not top, she will only be "friends" with the other non-top cat and will try to get the other non-top to play only with her and not with "top." Eventually, "top" concedes to Metuka for a bit and they are a family again until someone gets annoyed and reasserts herself as "top." Repeat.)
