More like O.J. calling the "real killers" sick and depraved.

McCain's campaign is being run by a Rove acolyte; I suspect that Rove is directly involved as well.

And, come on, we're talking abort Karl Rove here. The truth can't get within 10 feet of him without curdling, mutating into something so foul and hideous that it would make H.P. Lovecraft curl up in a corner and weep. Actually, that's a pretty good description of Rove himself.

So there's got to be an angle here, even if it's just sleight of hand to obscure the fact that he's deeply involved in the campaign. The man has a double-digit negative approval rating; Even his most ruthless, sociopathic political allies can't stand him -- he's got the creepy air of a man who jerks off to "Faces of Death." They're even less eager to be associated with him than with Bush.

Looking in more detail, it looks like Rove was trying to set up a tu quoque defense (i.e. "they both do it, so neither one can really be criticized for it") to immunize McCain against the "sleazy campaign" charge. The problem was that Rove attacking a Democrat was a Dog Bites Man story, but Rove attacking a Republican was a Man Bites Dog story -- so the latter is the only part that got noticed.
