Invasion Of The Mutant Attack Squirrels

The report is from the UK -- they haven't shown up in North America... yet.

There are black squirrels at Haverford College, and in fact the black squirrel is their sports mascot (at least for some teams - it's generally that or the "Fighting Quakers"). They are feisty little creatures, but then they're used to getting college students to feed them. (I've seen a grey one at Bryn Mawr attempting to haul off a whole discarded pizza box, presumably with some pizza left within...)

Yeah, but are the Haverford black squirrels known to gang up on small dogs and tear them to shreds?

The Russian squirrels may be a different strain from the North American one -- it would pretty much have to be, from what I can glean from the article -- just with the same pigment-affecting mutation.

I guess we'll know once the Russian ones make their way over here surreptitiously, as many ecosystem-ravaging species have done, and start going Conquistador on their North American cousins.

Incidentally, I'd never seen a photo of a red squirrel. Too freaking cute.

Actually, a similar thing is happening here on the East coast. Back in the day, oh 30 years ago, we here had brown squirrels and grey ones, which interbred to make the brown-grey ones we have had for quite a while. Then, Western Black Squirrels crossed the Appalachians, and there were fears they would out compete the locals, as they are more agressive.

Instead, we now have brown-grey-black squirrels, as they are interbreeding. So who knows what may happen on Great Britain in the end.

When I was a kid in Yonkers, NY, there were black squirrels there. That was in the fifties.

Huh. They only started appearing around DC about 8 years ago, a bit earlier in parts of Maryland. Based on where i live, the blacks seem to do better with more open spaces than the brown/greys.

Has anyone alerted ohiblather to this rather alarming news yet?

We had black squirrels at Princeton. In fact, we were famous for them, since orange and black are Princeton's colors. We used to cheer for the Mirkwood Squirrels when I was in school.

You know, I think all of you who have related stories of black squirrels living peacefully and cutely in North America are missing the point (or at least failing to be even facetiously terrified by it) -- those Russian fuckers are carnivorous!

Or at least capable of ganging up on and disemboweling larger mammals.

I'm sorry, but the prospect of a mass of furry piranhas (or, if you prefer, a swarm of cute, fuzzy killer bees) making its way across the ecosphere is a bit disturbing.

On the other hand, we could release a bunch of them in New York and let them go after the rats (and he other squirrels, and the pigeons, and the small over-bred dogs on the upper east side, and the occasional momentarily unattended infant...no, this is not a good idea.)

I mean, seriously: Killer. Fucking. Squirrels.

It's in Revelations, people!

Though how common is it for them to actually attack, and under what general food availability situations do they do so. Guess i'll do some research today.
