Back From Philcon
We had a little adventure* on the drive home Sunday night when a pothole flattened both tires on one side of the car. We were able to pull off the road without further incident, and eventually** got through to our auto club. When the tow truck arrived (they were fairly quick after the auto club finally got its act together), it stopped off at a nearby Holiday Inn so we could retrieve luggage for the night, and then went on to the operator's shop. It took until yesterday afternoon for the shop to find the right tires and put them on; we finally got home late last night.

*It was after we'd stopped to eat, so it didn't make us late for dinner. It was nasty and uncomfortable, and IMO "makes you spend money you'd rather use for something else" is a valid substitute for "makes you late for dinner".

**Better World Auto Club has apparently merged with Allstate, which may have something to do with the fact that service was much worse than on any previous occasion. We may or may not change to AAA when it comes up for renewal, but I think we're definitely not going to recommend BW any more.

I got two flat tires one weekend (mid-90s) in Nowheresville, WV. That was all sorts of fun. For several years now, I've carried two spares (the donut that came with my car and a full-sized spare tire) in my trunk to keep that from ever happening again. (This is called "preparing for the last war.")

Unpleasant! The only time I have had problems with AAA I was truly in the middle of nowhere so they get some slack. Every other time was smooth sailing.

...it happened at 2 am, IIRC.

The importaint thing is that you both are all right.

As for AAA, the three times I have dealt with them (1989 (aprox), 1995 and 2007), they have been good. (One was a car problem, one was a crash that I walked away from unhurt and the last was running out of gas at 3:30am that got written slightly into a filksong I actually have a writing credit on.)

The only problem I had with AAA was secondhand. I was sitting with mooneflowerz when her car stalled earlier this year. We called AAA, and waited. And waited. And waited. Turns out they dispatched a tow truck from Middletown, CT and not where we were in Middletown, OH. D'oh!

I'm relieved to hear that you eventually got home OK. My mother lost a tire to a pothole a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately she was right down the street from a tire shop so she was able to wobble in without having to be towed.
I've had AAA for several years and they've been reasonably prompt the few times I've had to call them.
